ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATION FOR AWARD-WINNING “LES MISÉRABLES”

LES MISÉRABLES, the official French submission for the 92nd Academy Awards received the coveted Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film it was announced in Los Angeles earlier today.  The film which was acquired for distribution in South Africa by Videovision Entertainment, is the debut feature film by director Ladj Ly who co-wrote the screenplay with Giordano Gederlini and Alexis Manenti.  It is produced by Toufik Ayadi, Christophe Barall and stars Damien Bonnard, Djibril Zonga, Alexis Manenti and Almamy Kanouté.

LES MISÉRABLES has been on a winning streak since it was won the prestigious Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year, as well as winning the Best International Film and Best Screenplay awards at the Durban International Film Festival. It has also won the Best International Film prize at the Jerusalem Film Festival; the Audience Award and the Greek Film Critics Association Award at the Athens International Film Festival, the Michel d’Ornano Award at the Deauville Film Festival, the Directors to Watch prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the European Film Festival’s Discovery Award and the Audience Award from the El Gouna Film Festival;

Sanjeev Singh, Videovision Entertainment’s Director of Acquisition and Distribution said, “The Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film is a fantastic achievement for Ladj Ly as it is his first feature.  The nomination is a coming of age for him as it recognizes his talent as a director.  When I viewed LES MISÉRABLES in May last year, I was confident that it would receive an Academy Award nomination and scheduled the South African release of the film after the announcement of these nominations.”

LES MISÉRABLES will released in South Africa by Videovision Entertainment through United International Pictures (Africa), on 17 January 2020.
