THE SHOWERHEAD vividly chronicles Zapiro’s journey from his beginnings as a liberation artist and political detainee during apartheid, to his rise as an unwavering champion of freedom of expression, fearlessly confronting the complexities of South Africa’s current democratic landscape.
The Showerhead examines the work of cartoonist Zapiro, from anti-apartheid struggle-artist to freedom of expression champion and reviews former President Jacob Zuma’s scandal-ridden ascent, reign, and ultimate ousting, via Zapiro’s cartoons, which capture issues in the post-Mandela period – corruption, subversion of the Constitution and the rule of law, and threats to freedom of expression.
It considers freedom of expression in contemporary South Africa with reference to the boundaries tested in Zapiro’s cartoons and his resolute defiance of attempts to stifle his work, and affirms the continuing relevance of Zapiro’s cartoons as exemplars of a culture of critique in a fragile democracy.
